When crafting our Kentucky Straight Rye Whiskey, we meticulously work with 5 sources of flavor to ensure exceptional taste and balance flavor. Grain – the first of 5 sources – is exactly sourced to produce the defined taste we’re looking for in every bottle of Woodford Reserve. The mash bill of Woodford Reserve Rye Whiskey is 53% Rye, resulting in a liquid with pronounced spice notes that’s sweetly hinted with fruit before a long finish. Flavors of pepper and tobacco are prevalent with a long fruit and sweetly spiced finish. Other flavors present include clove, mint, apple, pear, and honey.
In order to call a whiskey, “Rye” in America there are several criteria that it must meet. The most significant is the mashbill, which must be at least 51% Rye grain by definition. Woodford Reserve Rye Whiskey only goes slightly over this 51% mark with a 53% mash bill of Rye grain. By only going slightly above the minimum percentage of Rye grain, this whiskey keeps a lot of the flavors known to a Bourbon style whiskey as well. Some other whiskies that have much higher percentages of rye grain include; Bulleit Rye, Crown Royal Rye, and Woody Creek Rye. All of these whiskeys contain a mashbill of 90% to 100% rye grain, which in turn makes for a much spicier finishing product.
Woodford has created a rye whiskey that is a more balanced product. By not exceeding the 51% mark by much the whiskey created is balanced with just enough fruit sweetness to help balance the rye spice flavor. Next time you are looking for a rye whiskey that is closer to a high rye bourbon, look no further than Woodford Reserve Rye Whiskey. Take a bottle home for $39.99 and enjoy your rye cocktails tonight.
