Henry Rowe Schoolcraft was a botanist, geographer, and explorer in the early 1800’s. During his journeys he discovered that peppermint schnapps were very common amongst the people he came in contact with. Wondermint, a peppermint schnapps liquor, aims to recreate the type of spirit that Schoolcraft would have encountered during his travels. It is a mishmash of herbs and botanicals with the peppermint flavor at its core.
Death’s Door Distillery is based in Middleton Wisconsin and makes many craft spirits today. They introduced Wondermint which is a vodka based spirit; however it also contains mint, almond, rosewater, and wormwood flavors. The Wondermint is anything but your average peppermint schnapps. Most peppermint schnapps in today’s market is either too syrupy or too sweet for many peoples taste, but it is still very popular amongst ski enthusiasts for some reason. Wondermint is a more dry finishing peppermint option which has a more complex flavor profile due to the herbs and botanicals it contains.
If you are looking for something more complex in your peppermint based cocktails, Wondermint is the perfect choice. Try it as a shot to warm yourself on these cold winter days, or maybe substitute it for your vodka in your next Moscow Mule cocktail. The ginger beer and lime are a great mix with the mint and herbal flavors. Even a Southside, Stinger, or Grasshopper cocktail would be great options for trying with the Wondermint.
