Whistle Pig Rye Whiskey
Whistle Pig is honored with being one of the most awarded Rye Whiskey makers in the world. Rye Whiskey is definitely catching up in popularity to its cousin spirit Bourbon all over the world. They started with a vision: grain, water, wood. They call it Triple Terroir. Fields of Rye are grown on their farm, distilling whiskey to be aged in barrels made from their own oak trees, perfect it with water straight from their well.
WhistlePig began when Founder & Chief Steward of the Brand Raj Peter Bhakta purchased the farm in 2007. After a few years of deep consideration and personal reflection he committed to crafting the best farm-to-bottle rye. With help from Master Distiller Dave Pickerell, they discovered and purchased an incredible stock of blending whiskey in Canada that was profoundly misused. That initial stock of whiskey, for which we are forever grateful, is what allowed us to pursue our vision of a fully farm to bottle distillery.
Rye Whiskey has the potential to be best whiskey in the world. There is no more flavorful whiskey than Rye; it has a robust, spicy character, and a dark, rich flavor. As rye contains less sugar than any other grain, Rye Whiskey is a challenge to produce, requiring aging longer than other whiskies to attain a desired smoothness. But when handled properly, there is no comparison: the brat rye whiskey, once tamed, emerges from many years in the barrel with the power of a linebacker and the grace of a ballerina.
One of the more unique aspects of the Whistle Pig Rye Whiskies is the wood they age it in: Vermont Oak.
As part of our commitment to Triple Terroir, we cut down our estate-grown oak trees to make our barrels. Why? Vermont is about as far north as oak trees can grow. The shorter growing seasons leads to oak trees with the most growth rings- when aging whiskey encounters a growth ring in a barrel it imparts flavor, so our custom Vermont Oak barrels bring tremendous depth to our whiskeys.
Whistle Pig Distillery also believes in 3 core principles in making their whiskies:
FAMILY & EMPLOYEE OWNED
COMMITMENT TO QUALITY OVER PROFITS
These 3 principles allow the Rye Whiskey to remain consistent and truly shows how dedicated they are to making an outstanding product.
The spirit of entrepreneurship.
Fortune, superb taste, and hustle lead us to the discovery of an aged Rye Whiskey stock in Alberta, Canada. We rescued the stock from misuse as a blending whiskey, aged it in new American Oak with a bourbon barrel finish, then hand-bottled this rye on its own. We’re honored to present the most awarded Rye Whiskey in the world.
Nose: Allspice, orange peel, anise, oak, char and caramel
Palate: Sweet; hints of caramel and vanilla, followed by ryespice and mint
Finish: Long finish; warm butterscotch and caramel.
An excellent representation of an aged Rye whiskey whiskey with the finish of bourbon to balance out the flavor profile.
Rye inspired by Old World barrel-aging traditions.
This 86-proof 12 year-old Rye Whiskey is a marriage of whiskeys aged in New American Oak and ingeniously finished in Port (7%,) French Sauternes (30%,) and Madeira casks (63%). We’ve taken the elements that are most quintessential in an American rye – boldness and character – and fused them with the elegance and grace of an 18 year old Scotch.
Nose: Caramel, vanilla, and winter fruit
Palate: Rye spice, apricots, plums, raisins, dates, and honey
Finish: Dark chocolate, winter fruit, caramel, and vanilla
A wonderful representation of American & European styles. The Bold Rye character compliments the triple cask finish to produce a sweet yet inviting Scotch/Rye/Wine cask hybrid flavor.
At 92 proof & our oldest whiskey, this is the first WhistlePig product finished in Vermont Estate Oak harvested right from our farm. Vermont oak has more rings than the standard oak used in whiskey barrels, and each ring is an opportunity to impart more flavor and depth in the whiskey. With a score of 97 points from Wine Enthusiast and perfected over 15 years, we are proud to offer this pure expression of Vermont’s best.
Nose: Deep and rich, dominated by caramel, vanilla, and oak with hints of allspice and burnt orange
Palate: Warm, rich, and slightly creamy. Loads of butterscotch and baking spice with leather and a hint of tobacco
Finish: Ultra long and rich, warm, and inviting
A wonderful representation of Vermont Oak, Bold Rye, and mellow 15 Year aging smoothness. The longer a whiskey sits in a barrel the more flavor it gives to the liquid inside. Vermont Oak, as mentioned above, has more “growth rings” than Kentucky Oak which allows the Whiskey to become more flavorful over time. My personal favorite of the 3, and also super limited, the Whistle Pig 15 Year Rye Whiskey shows you what time and the art of distilling can produce. Get one if you can.
