Unique and hard to find beers at West Vail Liquor

Casey Brewing

We carry some beers that you might not see elsewhere in the valley.

There are so many new breweries opening up, and new beers coming out that it is almost impossible to stay on top of them and carry them all. But we certainly try to carry those that are ‘hot’ or widely requested, and of course, those that taste good! While the ubiquitous IPA is still the most popular craft beer style in America, the rise in popularity of sour beers, saisons, and other off-beat styles has not gone un-noticed. We are fortunate to be able to carry some of these harder to find beers.

Casey Brewing, out of Glenwood Springs, Colorado, has quickly become one of the hottest breweries in the state. Troy Casey’s one man operation produces some of the best Belgian, wild yeast, fruit and sour style beers around, and we are fortunate to be the only retail outlet for his beers in Eagle County. Troy began brewing his beers commercially in the fall of 2013, and settled on Glenwood Springs for his home base. The brewing actually takes place at another local brewery, but all of his beers are barrel aged and blended at his facility along the Roaring Fork River in South Glenwood Springs. His beers are made using old world techniques, and are made almost entirely with Colorado sourced ingredients. He opens his outlet to the public once a month for tasting and sales, and the line starts forming before dawn. Not all of his beers make it out of his tasting room for distribution, most notably the fruit beers at this point. But we have been fortunate to carry the Saison, the East Bank and the Oak Theory here at West Vail Liquor Mart. We currently have the Saison and East Bank in stock, with more on the way. The Saison is citrusy, dry, tart and effervescent, with an ABV of 5.5% and 25 IBU’s. The East Bank is a Farmhouse Ale made with honey and fermented with wild yeast in open barrels. The beers are unfiltered and bottle conditioned. Each costs $18.99 for a 750ml bottle.

Crooked Stave Brewery, out of Denver, Colorado, began brewing in 2011. They have become renowned for their Belgian style sours, saisons, wild yeast and fruit beers. We would run down to Denver now and again to pick up some of their beers, but they have now begun distributing to the mountains, and we are fortunate enough to be able to carry them on a regular basis. And not only are they distributing their own products, but also beers from an eclectic selection of other highly regarded breweries from around the world, such as Breakside (Portland), Perennial (St. Louis), Almanac (San Francisco), Prairie (Oklahoma), Achel (Belgian Trappist) and 8 wired (New Zealand), to name just a few. This is a rotating selection, so you’re sure to find a wide variety of styles and producers. Our current selection of Crooked Stave beers is:

Vieille Artisanal Saison, aged in oak barrels. 4.2% ABV. $7.29 for a 375ml bottle.

St. Bretta Citrus Wildbier, fermented in oak foeders. 5.5% ABV. $7.49 for a 375ml bottle.

Petite Sour Passion Fruit, mixed fermentation ale aged in oak barrels with passion fruit. 5.5% ABV. $8.49 for a 375ml bottle.

Colorado Wild Sage Mountain Saison, brewed with white sage and lemongrass. 7.2% ABV. $7.49 for a 375ml bottle.

Progenitor, dry hopped golden sour ale. 6.2% ABV. $8.49 for a 375ml bottle.
