Rose Season

Springtime means the sun is a little higher in the sky, the temperatures have warmed, the days are longer and the new release of Rose wines have been arriving at the Liquor store. Over the past few years there has been an incredible increase of Rose wine available. It seems as if every winery is making a Rose these days.

Most Rose wine is made by crushing black-skinned grapes and leaving the skins in contact with the juice for a short period of time, from an hour or two up to a few days. Although Rose is meant to be drunk within a year or two, you can find age-worthy ones, such as the Organic Bandol Rose from Domaine Tempier. One of the few styles aged in neutral oak before bottling.

You will be able to find Rose made from most any varietal. Last year I often found myself leaning towards ones from the Nebbiolo grape, such as Ioppa, and the Tempranillo grape, such as Muga. (This years have yet to arrive.) Currently, Rose wine made from Garnacha, Syrah, and Pinot Noir grapes have been impressing me.

The 2016 Borsao Rose ($9.99) from Spain is drinking extremely well. This 100% Garnacha has aromas of flowers and lighter berries, with a slight sweetness on the nose, but the flavor comes through bolder with well balanced acidity. The Chateau de Paraza ($14.99) from Languedoc is evenly split with Syrah and Grenache and has red currant and strawberry flavors and a crisp acidity that allow it to pair with items from Sushi to chorizo. On the slightly sweeter side is the Cottonwood Cellars White Pinot Noir ($15.99) from right here in Colorado that can be enjoyed with Cheddar cheese or perhaps spicy Mexican food.

Those who enjoy wine appreciate the crisp and refreshing nature of Rose with its low tannins and ability to enjoy anytime. Rose makes a great aperitif while you are relaxing on your patio with your friends on a beautiful Colorado bluebird day. I am partial to enjoying Rose for a picnic with lighter foods and cheeses, mild fish or pasta primavera. My boss, Nico, offered that even saltier and oily food, like sardines, can be a great pairing.

Whether you are looking for a porch pounder or the best choice to go with an elegant sit down dinner, we have a Rose wine for you to enjoy. Oh, and most Rose wine is less than $20.
