We recently expanded our beer inventory to include a warm section of specialty beers, located adjacent to the beer cooler, on the back side of the Australian wine section. This will allow us to carry a larger selection of beers that can be aged, such as some Belgian styles, and free up some of our cooler space for beers that need to stay cold like fresh hop beers and IPA’s. We are excited to be able to expand our selection, and to offer beers that we didn’t have enough space for previously. One such brand is Ommegang, perhaps America’s leading producer of Belgian style ales.
The Ommegang Brewery was established just outside of Cooperstown, New York in 1997 by Don Feinberg and Wendy Littlefield, along with the owners of the Vanburg & Dewulf beer import company, and three family owned breweries from Belgium, including Duvel Moortgat, the makers of the famous Duvel Golden Ale. It was built on a 136 acre parcel that was previously a hop farm in the small town of Milford, near Cooperstown, in the Susquehanna River Valley. The brewery design is based on a traditional Belgian farmhouse brewery. By 2003, the partnering Belgian breweries were absorbed into larger corporations, and Feinberg and Littlefield sold their share of the Brewery to Duvel Moortgat, now the sole owner of the brewery.
It is probably America’s most well known Belgian style brewery, and sometimes its beers are mistakenly thought to be Belgian, given their styles, and the brewery’s Belgian ties. The brewery currently distributes to 43 states in the U.S. Ommegang’s dedication to quality and the Belgian tradition of brewing is their utmost priority, as indicated in the mission statement on their website:
EVERY GRAIN OF MALT, EVERY CONE OF HOP, EVERY SEED OF SPICE, EVERY LIVING YEAST, EVERY MOUNTAIN BREEZE, EVERY NEW TASTE, EVERY SONG THAT’S SUNG ON OUR STAGE, EVERYTHING THAT HELPS USHER OUR BEER INTO THIS WORLD, IS HERE FOR A REASON.
Because everything we do has a reason.
There is a craft to each and every aspect of what we do that goes way beyond making beer, and nothing is left to chance.
It’s in the deliberate steps of our brew day. The breath of our corks. The strength of the bottles. The shape of the glasses. The stories on each of the labels. The food you enjoy with our beer. The festivals we hold. The friends we make and the communities we build.
Everything works together to bring these lively beers to you and the friends around you.

300 foot wells drawing off the aquifer beneath the farm. The hops come from Slovenia, Germany and the U.S. (This area of upstate New York was the main hop producer in the U.S. in the 1800’s, producing 80% of the hops used to make beer.) The base malt is 2 row pilsner, with specialty malts coming from Belgium, Germany and America. The spices, most important to Belgian beer, include grains of paradise, ginger, star anise, cumin, coriander and orange peel. The brewing process is true to traditional Belgian processes, including open fermentation.
These beers are world class, and we are proud to be able to offer them to you. Stop on in and see what’s new!
