Michael David Winery

The Michael David Winery was founded in 1984 by Michael Phillips, with his brother Dave joining him in 1989, on the Phillips family farm that was homesteaded in 1865. They are located in the Lodi Appellation of California 100 miles east of San Francisco Bay, just to the north of Stockton.

Michael David wines are known for their full bodied reds such as Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Petit Sirah. The sandy soils of their specific area, near the South Mokelumne River, are ideal for growing these varietals. They make a style of fruit driven wines known for their rich silky texture and mild tannins with alcohol content approaching and above 15%.

The Lodi area today is best known for their Zinfandel with some Old Vines over 100 years old. 7 Deadly Zins is one of the most popular Old Vine Zinfandels in the country. Complex aromas of tart cherry, raspberry and caramel are wrapped in flavors of chocolate cake, vanilla oak spice, and plenty of wood smoke. Medium bodied with a rich smooth texture, mild tannins and a beautiful garnet color. The more limited production Earthquake Zinfandel is aged in 80% American Oak and 20% French Oak and has aromas of cherry pie filling, dark berry, smoke and spice. Full bodied with soft, upfront flavors of stewed dark fruits, strawberry jam, licorice, baking spice and black tea.

The Freakshow Cabernet Sauvignon has quickly become one of Michael David’s most sought-after wines. Aged in French Oak for 15 months, this brute of a Cab is midnight in color and medium plus in body. Flavors of ripe Mission figs and hints of clove and cinnamon give way to velvety tannins, balanced acidity and dark ripe fruits. Blackberry, dark cherry and pomegranate are backed with smoky vanilla oak, spice, and cassis pop on the front with nice tannins and a lingering finish. It’s bold but complex and will be a lot of fun to drink with red meat.

Earthquake Petite Sirah is full bodied, oaky, and silky smooth. A deep, vivid, teeth staining purple! Notice flavors of blueberry and blackberry liqueur, camphor and violets with a long finish. The tannins are substantial enough to create a wonderfully structured wine. A super dark color and effusive aromas of wood smoke, raisin and dried fig set the stage for extremely concentrated ripe fruit on the palate and a thickly tannic texture. The exuberance of the grape and blackberry flavors nicely counterbalances the firm texture.

When you are looking for bold red wines that are easy to enjoy, the wines of Michael David should be high on your list. Some of their other wines that can be found in the store are Petite Petit, Earthquake Cabernet Sauvignon, and Freakshow Red Blend.
