The Glaetzer’s immigrated to the Barossa Valley in just outside of Adelaide in 1888 coming from Germany. This family is actually one of the first established winemakers in the region. Fast forward 100 years and Ben Glaetzer’s father Colin establishes the Glaetzer family winery. Colin had over 30 years wine experience working all over Australia and worked in the Barossa Valley for Barossa Valley Estate. In 1995 he founded Glaetzer wines with their first vintage in 1996.
The Glaetzer wines come from a specific northern part of Barossa called “Ebenezer.” This is a unique sub-region within the Barossa and is covered with a sandy clay loam on top of a Limestone base. The weather is typically very dry which results in a very condensed, concentrated grape. The focus of the Glaetzer’s is to make a small production; high quality wine. Their four wines are coming from vines that are 80 to 110 years old which are extremely low yielding. The Barossa can be susceptible to drought and these older vines with deeper root structure can adapt and survive during testing conditions. The Barossa Valley is known for Shiraz and this is the star varietal in the Glaetzer wines, although they do have other plantings such as Grenache and Cabernet Sauvignon.
Ben Glaetzer, the son of Colin, has now taken over the winemaking for the winery. He has achieved a sort of cult status because of the accolades the wines have received over the years. He focuses on a minimal approach to the winemaking, but produces what are regarded as “classic” Barossa wines. The wines all start with sourcing great fruit. They are all using a consistent; neutral yeast for fermentation. The fermentation receives a longer skin contact period, the purpose of which is to soften the wine while adding more structure. The wines then see a variation of time in Mostly French and a smaller percentage of American oak. The wines are very full and dark colored but possess a softness and tannin integration that make these wines so unique. They are big and bold yet smooth and approachable.
Amon Ra, Anaperenna, Wallace, and Bishop are the 4 wines the family produces. We currently carry the first 3 here at West Vail Liquor Mart. These wines have received numerous awards and are currently some of the most sought after wines from Australia.
