For the month of January here at West Vail Liquor Mart we will be featuring Spanish wines from the Gil Family of wines. The Gil family wineries started gathering small wineries around Spain in 2002 to come under one roof. They focus on older wineries that use indigenous varietals.
In 1916 Juan Gil Jimenez built the Juan Gil winery in a region called Jumilla. This winery now is responsible for the production of the Juan Gil wines and the Honoro Vera wines. Jumilla is a region in the Southeast of Spain that is known for being extreme in all seasons. It is cold in the winter and extremely hot in the summers and the same drastic fluctuation between day and night. Monastrell is the dominant varietal grown here as it excels in the rough limestone and sandy soils, extreme heat and little to no water. The Monastrell vines on the Gil property average 40 years in age. We will be featuring 3 wines from Juan Gil; Juan Gil, Honoro Vera Garnacha and Honoro Vera Monastrell.
Cellars Can Blau is one of the older projects for the Gil family and the wine is sourced and produced in the Monsant region of Spain. This is an area that surrounds the infamous Priorat region and uses similar varietals such as Garnacha, Carinena, and Mazuelo. They have 35 hectres of Vineyards that have an average age of 40 years old. The vineyards are a mix of Sandy and Clay for the Carinena and Mazuelo, Slate and limestone for the Garnacha. We will be featuring two wines from Cellars Can Blau: Blau and Can Blau
In addition to these wines above we will be offering 2 white wines; Shaya arindo and Kentia Albarino. The Arindo is Verdejo and comes from Rueda. The Kentia is Albarino and comes from the Rias Baixas.
These are all great wines and will be offered at a discounted price all month!
