Four Roses distillery is based in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky, and offers some of the best bourbons out there. They received the award of “Distiller of the Year” by Whisky Magazine in 2011,2012,2013, & 2015. Receiving this award for 4 of the last 5 years is quite impressive. So what makes their bourbons so special? Four Roses uses a unique process that is specific to their distillery, and it surely is something that has been working for them for years. Here is the process that they use to make the best bourbon available.
Four Roses uses 2 mashbills & 5 proprietary yeast strains to produce 10 distinct bourbon recipes. Each of these bourbon recipes have unique flavors that highlight the mashbill and yeast strains that are used to produce them. Once these bourbons are produced, the Master Distiller then blends these unique recipes together to create 3 different types of bourbons. The yellow label bourbon, their least expensive offering, is a blend of all 10 of these bourbon recipes. The small batch bourbon is a blend of 4 of these, while the single barrel bourbon is only one of these recipes that never gets blended after being distilled. By producing these blended bourbons people get to sample different recipes that have been brought together to offer a myriad of flavors. Customers can choose the small batch to taste only 4 of these blended recipes, or the single barrel which highlights the raw flavor of just one of these recipes un-blended. Offering several bourbons gives the consumer options of what to choose from, as well as what flavors they may be looking for in a blended bourbon vs a single barrel bourbon.
