With Washington State in its infancy, but the wines gaining notoriety; a few producers from there are starting stand out. A lot of the small boutique producers have been popping up and then there are the big producers. One person specifically has had a rapid rise and gained a lot of recognition over the last decade and that person/winery is Charles Smith. He grew up in California and at a young age traveled to Europe and started managing rock bands traveling around Europe. Through this exposure, Charles gained a passion for fine wine and food. Moving back to the US, he landed outside Seattle and opened a Wine shop. From there he traveled through the small town of Walla Walla and met a French winemaker and decided to move there and start producing his own wine…
He produced his first wine in 2001 which was the 1999 K Syrah and that amounted to about 300 cases. From there it was a whirlwind. He developed the House wine brand in 2004 which eventually sold to Precept Brands. Then in 2006 he introduced the “Modernist Project” which had a focus of delivering varietally correct wines that were ready to drink upon release. All the labels are black and white and sort of reflect the “rock star” personality that has been associated with Charles Smith. Through this line of wines along with the “K Vintners” series of wine, Charles has piled up the awards including 2014 Wine Enthusiasts winemaker of the year, and was awarded the first 100 pt. Syrah from Washington. All of the wines have really developed a sort of cult status and definitely have a unique personality.
