Bodega Catena Zapata

Over a hundred years ago Nicola Catena came to Argentina from Italy; 1898 to be exact. He left Europe in search of a new life in Argentina and first planted vineyards in the area of Mendoza in 1902. He took a risk planting Malbec, historically used as a blending grape in Bordeaux. His son Domingo continued the family tradition and added a lot of property, expanding the winery, becoming one of the largest landholders in Mendoza by the 1960’s. The 1960’s was a rough period for Argentina in general and this transferred to the Catena Family. The countries economy was struggling and so was the winery. Nicolas Catena, third generation, took over the winery in the mid 1960’s. With a PhD in economics, he tried to expand the business but also worked as a professor in Berkeley, California during the 1970’s. The economic situation in Argentina worsened but by spending time in Napa, California and seeing Napa finally start to get recognition against European wines, he went back to Argentina and focused on fine wine production. At the time this was seen as crazy. Argentina had a reputation for cheap bulk wine, and the Catena family was going to try and reverse the trend and get in the fine wine game.

He then took a big risk by exploring some of the higher elevations, closer to the Andes, for planting. Though no one new at the time, these plots were ideal for growing vines. Dialing in what varieties for what plots was the mission during the 80’s and early 90’s and by 1994 it seemed they had matched the puzzle pieces. This experimentation resulted in the birth of the Alta series and to be honest Ultra premium wine from Mendoza. In 2001 Nicolas’s daughter Laura took over the winemaking and has continued in the tradition of making some of the best wines available from Argentina!

These wines are recognizable by the iconic “Pyramid” winery displayed on their labels.
