Beers of Summer

Now that the Fourth of July is all but here, we can all kick back and say it’s finally summer! Nothing is better than hanging out on a day off with a cold brew and we’ve got a lot of different options here for nice summer refreshment. There is no rule that says you can’t drink something heavy like a stout in the summertime. However, under the hot Colorado sun I like a nice thirst quenching option. Here are some styles and some examples of great summer beer.

#1. Fruit Beers –
Summer and fruit have always gone together. So why not have some fruit in your beer. Fruit beers have grown increasingly popular and dynamic recently. You could go for a fruited IPA and get the best of both worlds. Right now the Eddyline Grapefruit Crankyanker may be my favorite fruited IPA. It is both sweet and bitter at the same time and gives a nice mango cocktail feel. Eddyline is beer of the month here at West Vail Liquor Mart for another few days, so grab this one while it is on sale.

#2. Lagers –
When you are out mowing the lawn, nothing goes better than a nice lager to quench your thirst. There are a ton of great lagers here at the store. From the classic big boys of the beer world to craft brewed crisp Pilsners and lagers, there are endless options within this style. A personal favorite for me right now is Bohemian Girl Pilsner from Tivoli Brewing out of Denver. It is so refreshing and alsao full of great flavor.

#3. Sour Beer –
The newest trend that we get asked about everyday here at the store is sour beer. With developments in this style recently, there are a lot of choices and you do not need to spend a ton to give this one a shot. There are plenty of great sour options that come in 6pks and 4pks now making this style much more approachable than it once was. My all time favorite is from Odd13 Brewing. Vincent Van Couch is a dry hopped sour that is the ultimate summer beer to me. It is limited in availability so make sure to stock up when you see it. For an everyday sour, try Apricot Sour from Dry Dock brewing. It is only $9.99 on the shelf and awesome in its own right.

I feel that these styles really work for hot summer days. However, you don’t have to take my word for it. Drink whatever appeals to you and enjoy the Vail summer!
