While on vacation in 1995 American Edward Tutunjian fell in love with Chile and its wines. At that moment he decided to invest in Chile and acquired his first vineyard. Since that time he has transformed the company into a multi-valley winery, with a presence in five of the major wine-producing valleys of Chile. This has allowed for a larger variety of grapes to be utilized while allowing them to grow in optimum conditions in the regions most appropriate for each varietal.

Recently our store began offering three wines from their Reserva line. Two, the Carmenere and the Cabernet Sauvignon, are from the Apalta Valley in Colchagua. The third, a Rose, is from the Maule Valley. All of the grapes are Estate Grown allowing for greater control of the fruit as the wine is made entirely on the winery’s property—it doesn’t ever leave the property during fermentation, aging, or bottling.

The 2017 Rose is comprised of 85% Carmenere and 15% Syrah from the Maule Valley. The large diurnal temperature swings in this area are ideal for these grapes. The grapes were hand harvested when they were at a high level of acidity and a low level of sugar. The resulting low, 12.5%, alcohol level wine has a hint of citrus, raspberry and roses on the nose and a corresponding flavor with a touch of spice. The refreshing and crisp wine is dry with a medium body and a long finish.

The 2017 Apalta Valley Carmenere’s grapes are harvested later than those from the Maule Valley, when they have reached optimal maturity. After about 20 days of maceration and fermentation 50% of the wine is aged in oak barrels for about eight months. The resulting dark purple wine is intense from start to finish with tobacco notes and flavors of red and black cherries. This medium plus body wine is smooth with well integrated tannins and a round, long lasting and juicy finish.

The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon follows a near identical vinification process as the Carmenere. As with the Carmenere these grapes come from their own 60-hectare vineyard in the Apalta Valley area of the Colchagua Valley. This elegant wine has noticeable cherry flavor with a full bodied, yet velvety mouthfeel and a lingering finish.

Enjoy all of these great wines for only $13.99 here at West Vail Liquor Mart.
